William Sterling

Head of one of the four horses of the moon goddess Selene from the northern end of the East Pediment of the Parthenon in Athens c. 420 BC, currently in the British Museum. One of the most popular of the so-called Elgin Marbles which Lord Elgin rescued from Athens in the early nineteenth century. The East Pediment showed the birth of Athena as she burst out of the head of her father, Zeus, and the reaction of those who were present. Although all the central figures are long gone at either end are depictions of the sun god Helios rising from the sea with his four horse chariot and the moon goddess Selene returning to the sea with hers showing that Athena was born at dawn. British Museum Highlights – Around The World In 70 Minutes

These tours of the British Museum last 70 minutes and take in up to 12 highlights from the museum’s vast collection.  They are at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The tours cover both main floors of the museum plus some of the side rooms and examine objects from Africa, Europe, Asia, America and the Pacific from many different eras.  We work on a four week rota and mine are on a Sunday.  The dates for my tours in 2022 are January 30th, February 27th, March 27th, April 24th, May 22nd, June 19th, July 17th, August 14th, September 11th, October 9th, November 6th and December 4th.
