City Lit presents Classics Day in partnership with The British Museum and University College London.
The event will be held at the BP Lecture Theatre at the British Museum. Registration will start at 10.00 am and the first talk will begin at 10.30.
Classics Day 2014 will mark the 2,000th anniversary of the death of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
Augustus (63 BC –14 AD) is one of those rare historical figures who changed the world around him. He ended the Roman Republic, initiated an era of relative peace, the Pax Romana, consolidated Roman control over its empire spanning three continents and put military and administrative structures in place to ensure three centuries of prosperity for its inhabitants. Over the centuries he has been seen in many different ways, ranging from exemplary ruler to tyrant.
I shall be giving a talk on the Image of Augustus comparing the Meroe head to other portraits.
