The last 80 years of the Anglo-Saxon period saw turmoil with rival dynasties trying to take control. Canute’s reign was a high point in this period. His queen, Emma, was also a pivotal figure in our history.
We will examine the decline of England’s security under Ethelred II and despite rich resources to call upon he was unable to resist the attacks of Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Canute. The two dynasties took it turn to rule but Emma of Normandy kept some continuity as queen of both Ethelred and Canute and mother of Canute’s son King Hardicanute and his half brother Ethelred’s son Edward the Confessor. The powerful house of Godwine was also important to both dynasties and Godwine’s daughter Edith married Edward allowing her brother Harold to aspire to the throne after Edward’s death setting up the invasion by Emma’s great-nephew Duke William in 1066.
