Greek and Roman Entertainment

How did the Romans and Ancient Greeks entertain themselves?

This course will look at the ways in which Greeks and Romans found entertainment: through theatre and Music, Sports and Games, and Drinking Parties.

The Contrasting attitudes of the Greeks and Romans to the theatre as well as some of the plots of surviving plays. Although no music survives many depictions of musical instruments and some actual instruments survive which allow some reconstruction of music. Many depictions of sport survive on Athenian pottery and other objects allowing for detailed analysis of the Ancient Olympics and other sporting contest to be examined. Drinking parties were important social gatherings for both Greeks and Romans and descriptions survive in poetry and on pottery.
